The Egyptian legal system is based on a combination of the Islamic (Shariah) law and the Civil law (particularly Napoleonic Code, which was introduced during Napoleon Bonaparte’s occupation of Egypt). The Egyptian Constitution is considered Egypt’s supreme law. Judicial decisions have its own authority.
Courts are bound by the Court of Cassation (for civil, commercial, and criminal matters) and the Supreme Administrative Court (for administrative and other public law matters). Islamic jurisprudence is the primary source of legislation. The Ministry of Justice has the authority of Shariah courts and judges, which regulate the personal status law regarding marriage, divorce and child custody.
