1.2 Population Growth and Distribution
Egypt has one of the highest population growth rates in the Middle East, estimated at around 3% per annum. Out of the country’s 27 governorates, the most populated ones are Cairo, Giza, Sharkia, Dakahlia, Beheira, Minya, Kalyoubia, Alexandria, Gharbia and Sohag, representing around 68% of total Egyptian population shown in the chart below.



Rapid urbanization resulted in increased population densities in major cities. The rural areas capture 57% of the population while 43% reside in urban areas.
